Live from Uummannaq

The iceberg is melting really fast, because of it' s topspeed. The local people in Uummannaq are as enthusiastic as I am and join us to the iceberg. On the map it looks pretty close to UMQ, island, but they are already far away!
Something strange is going on the Uummannaq Bay: Last night the Uummannaq Bay filled itsselve with icebergs. Normally a happening for September........
The melting icebergs, cracking in pieces, is so loud that you even can hear it in your bed.
I don't have final plans for today, but leaving tomorrow.

In the middle of the night

Yesterday we filmed at 24:00 sharp. The sun touched the horizon but didn't go down. A great experience! We noticed that our iceberg was leaning to one site, but after we returned form the old Inuit mummy graves at the other side of the fjord, it turned back again in the good position. Unbelievable that an iceberg get's a character. Greetings from Uummannaq, Temperature: T-shirt, full sunshine, no wind.

Today we went with a boat to film the departure of the sculptures towards the Baffin Bay. Because the camera shakes in the boat, we decided to place the camera on other icebergs, that also provided us fot ater of thousands of years old. Great weather, great pictures, what can I say more? Arrival in uummannaq

I just returned from our first trip to the floating iceberg. It' s great and unbelievable how fast it is drifting. The shape didn't change much during it's drift, so we believe it will travel for a long time. The bay is filled with icebergs, way many more than in March. It looks like the wind will slow down, so we return to film a good impression. I included a picture of the dreamteam of the Uummannaq Polar Institute. A great crew.
Tonight we plan to go to Uummanatsiaq and stay there for while. I never was in Greenland without snow, but now I know where the green is coming from: It has to be the colour of the water.

Really great! Tomorrow Ap is leaving to Uummannaq to see the drifting iceberg by himselve. The route of the iceberg is very special. It turned first backwards to it's glacier where it was born, said goodbye and is now drifting back to Uummannaq. It's froozen waterdrops on the side are as tears for starting it's exciting voyage to an unknown world. We received pictures from Dr. Will Richard and a clip from Sara Svarta Sorensen, that are really cool! Of course Ap will send updates of this special trip, as internet connections allow.

As you can see, the start was going deeper into the bay, but now they are on their way back to Uummannaq, hopefully soon in Baffin Bay. Shortly new posts will arrive. We keep you in touch.

Iceberg still stuck

Despite 2 huge storms, some neighbour icebergs that turned over and floated away, our iceberg is still stuck. So everybody is free to send in new predictions when it starts to drift.

'The angle between earth and the sun changed'

Since I travel through the Arctic, I ask people what's their explanation for climate change. Some of the older hunters, who rely on the position of the sun for reasons of navigation, have an answer I never could explain: 'The angle between earth and the sun changed'. I got this answer many times in all different places.

Last week I read an article from a Belgian journalist who interviewed a hunter in Gjoa Haven, Northern Canada, and he told her the same answer: 'The angle of the sun changed'. I couldn't resist and contacted a friend of mine who next week will receive his Ph.D. in astronomy. His response was overwhelming: he asked me if I had a brain collapse. The angle between earth and the sun didn't change, and never will in the next thousands of years!
I can't get it out of my mind. Did the composition of atmospheric gasses change so that the breaking angle changed? I still don't have an explanation, but am sure that something changed. Who knows the answer?

The Danish Ambassador, H.E. Kirsten Malling Biering, invited Ap Verheggen to present project CE in attendance of the Canadian Ambassador H.E. Jim Wall, the Spanish Ambassador H.E. Juan Prat y Coll, the Ambassador of Finland H.E. Klaus Korhonen, and the Ambassador of Sweden, H.E. Hans Magnusson. Ap showed the presentation about the Uummannaq project and explained his mission regarding climate change. It made a deep impression how the people of the most beautiful Arctic spot in the world: Uummannaq, have to cope with a changing climate. Next to that Ap told about the Uummannaq Children's Home and the sunglasses project.
After all ambassadors told how climate change has it's impact in each country, it showed the need that project cool(E)motion has to continue.
Thanks to the support and hospitality of Des Indes: Pierre-Henri Bosovers & Ben Hardeman, it was a great success.

The sculptures are placed on the iceberg. Our first plan of going by dogsledges to the iceberg and place them on top was impossible. The sea ice is so bad that even our project seems to be overruled by the fast changing nature. I joined a couple of hunters untill the foot of the icecap, but even there we couldn' t trust the circumstances. Therefore we had to change our plan and put the sculptures with a helicopter on an iceberg that is very near to the village of Uummannaq. As we noticed the locals also can' t trust nature anymore. Normally the white plains are filled with dogsledges but now it is empty.

Thanks to our great team and the help of many local people, including the children of the Children's Home, we succeeded in making the art project. It was a very great experience standing on the iceberg, releasing the sculptures with in the background the famous mountains of Uummannaq. The sculptures look great! The voyage of the sculptures started as we could see that the iceberg already moved this morning.

Arrived in Uummannaq, the situation is worse than thought. Not much sea ice, but decreasing temperatures. If we go by boat far away, we don't know if we ever can get back. This because the ice could starts to grow very fast. But our team is thinking in solutions, instead of problems. It' s great to see a whole bunch of international crew getting mixed in finding our famous solutions. For outsiders a sort of verbal fight, between the best friends. Sunday we go with a sort of fishing boat of steel to the North and grave it into the sea ice. We bring hunters, dogs, and sledges and leave them behind. With a small group we go back for a day. As the rest of our team arrives we go back to the Sermigdlig Kangerlua on Tuesday and join the hunters deep into the fjord. We bring food and the sculptures with us, and stay till the weekend. A couple of days we don' t have any communication, but we arranged that a boat, and if he doesn't succeed a helicoper will get us from the ice. This is plan A, maybe it will change, as nature does too.

After a long trip we arrived yesterday in Ilulisat, and walked to the icefjord. Everybody was overwhelmed by the impressive size of icebergs, as big as complete city blocks. For Jan and Patrick their first Arctic experience. They couldn' t speak anymore as impressed they were.
Later in the hotel we caught ap with Dave Conover, from the Clearwater Foundation, Hudson river, who arranges later next week the skype contact with Pete Seeger. We have had an exciting day, followed by a short evening.
Today we fly over to Uummannaq, where our real adventure starts.

Today we start our trip to Uummannaq, Greenland. Tonight Copenhagen, tomorrow Ilulisat , and one day later by helicopter to Uummannaq, the most beautifil island in the world. Great to meet Ole Jorgen and Ann again! Let's start the adventure. I can't wait anymore.

Yesterday we were at Datema to pick ap the satellite systems. To be honoust: We were fully surprised about the diversity of the technical equipment. It is a strange thought that we place a huge sculpture on an iceberg, but what to think about to cummunicate with that same iceberg? The system will not only send webcam pictures, but also GPS information, as well as temperature and airpressure information. Many worldwide scientists will become jealous. Mark and Willem worked for many weeks, nights and weekends to make this all work. We are more than thankfull for their commitment!

Sculptures arrived in Qaarsut

We are very happy to announce that our sculptures arrived in Qaarsut, opposite the Uummannaq Bay. Because it was last month in The Hague colder than in Uummannaq, Greenland, the sea ice was retreated dramatically. A boat will transport them to Uummannaq.

A very succesfull 4 days of lobbying, discussions with NGO's, governments and journalists! We got some enthusiastic response after our presentation in the WWF tent and met some great people from all around the world. It was great that WWF also supported the presentation of ManyStrongVoices. Children from around the Arctic Circle were invited by this great organisation to tell their stories! We offered the kids NRGsociety glasses , as a rememberance for their participation in COP15.

We are now in Uummannaq, a beautiful town in the Umanak Fjord. Yesterday we went to the Icecap ( 60 km east ), and according to Ole Jorgen we were the first people ever that could reach it with a boat within a distance of 200 mtrs in mid October......... As we returned in the small boats the sun went down and the water instantly start to freese. Both OJ and I had problems with our eyes because of the sudden drop of temperature and the strong wind. The ice got thicker and I never knew that a small boat of fiberglass also could be used as an icebreaker.
The icebergs are more than beautiful around here and some of them are shaped for our project. It looks very good!
The support for our project is unimaginable. We started our trip to Greenland in Nuuk were we had a meeting with the chairman of the parliament, people from nature and environment etc. etc. All are ethusiastic it. We even met the deputy major of Ilullisat ( also Uummannaq ) during our flights upnorth and he also signed our letter of support.

The weather starts to get bad for the coming next days, so now we leave for a trip upnorth. We search in the area of Satut ( a small settlement ) for icebergs, as we can' t make it today to the Sermeq glacier.

Together with Petra, cool(E)motion co-Founder, we just returned from a trip to Svalbard, high in the Arctic North. We did research for a future project.

Svalbard
We sailed on the tallship: 'Antigua' to the island Nordauslandet, to visit the Brasvellbreen, Europe's largest glacier. Last year we also tried to get there, but even in the mid summer there is a lot of drifting ice. Often too much, but this year we succeeded.

Our route started in Longyearbuyen, sailing to the North, and turning South through the Hinlopen Strait. In this relatively narrow 'street' we suddenly got surprised by a hurricane and the ship was smashed at it's side. The result: three broken ribs and a knee as large as a babies head. The view of the glacier was it all worth. ( see pictures )

During our trip we filmed in total 16 polar bears, many walrusses and whales. It seemed they never had contact with humans before. The Arctic nature in these regions gave a feeling of unspoiled.

The process of making designs for the sculptures and the project logo.

I'm the type of sculptor who can think in three dimensions, a process impossible to translate on paper. Therefor I prefer to make models.

It starts with a simple wired model inspired on several stories of Inuit friends: The hunter has to wait for hours, standing completely still at a seal airhole. As the seal shows up the hunter turns from complete silence into an explosion of force and dynamic.

Hunting in the Arctic gets tougher and tougher. The climate as well as the culture is changing very rapidly. Will it soon all disappear? This question is so hard, with no soft answers that I chose the ' hunter ' as a symbol for project cool(E)motion.

Ole Jorgen Hammeken, an Inuit friend from Uummannaq, Greenland, told me many stories about their tradition of dogsledding. On the moment they don't know when and even if the ice is strong enough to carry the sledges. An uncertain time because of climatological changes. A wire model of an Inuit leading his dogs contained so much power that I decided to make a series of sculptures in wax and cast them in bronze. The tension and powerfull action in the lines were completed by the subtile balance in the sculpture itsselve.

Transfering these sculptures in the Arctic (animation) and place them on an iceberg is the ultimate challenge. Dynamic art on a dynamic surface. Culture and Nature interrelated.

By creating a gigantic and unprecedented art project, cool(E)motion wants to re-engage the public on the topic of climate change. It wants to do so in a positive manner, contrary to the fault-finding ‘propaganda’, scientific contradictions and/or the accusing finger.

Through provoking discussions and interactions our project will reach everybody.

We will demonstrate the inextricable link between climate and culture and visualize what the consequences of that link are. To illustrate this we will travel into the areas around the North Pole. The impressive dynamic natural elements that are typical of this area speak to everyone's imagination: a virginal white stage with unimaginable forces, such as rapidly receding glaciers, floating icebergs, drifting ice. On these dynamic stages we will place huge sculptures, which derive their inspiration from the local culture. These almost majestic sculptures will be propelled by their stages at high speeds toward their final destruction. In order to reach our audience with this magnificent theatrical drama, we will broadcast it live into people’s living rooms.

In this way, a new dimension to climate change will be added, putting feeling and emotion back into the debate.

Because cool(E)motion is very concerned about the effects of climate change moving south, we willgive the very first victims of climate change a voice: the Inuit, a group of people who currently have no voice. Their story will become ours. We realize that our stage may be far removed from people’s doorstep, therefore we will bring this project into people’s living room, via TV, and other modern media.

Since cool(E)motion condemns no one for actions, behaviours or opinions ofn the past, but rather puts its energy into creating a new sort of consciousness, everyone has a chance to participate and make a positive difference. Let us go out and start doing today what is required for tomorrow. We will offer a platform and show that everyone will make important decisions and investments, which will be necessary for our future.

Cool(E)motion‘s vision is providing a new strong viewpoint. Especially in changing times (crisis in Chinese is written by 2 syllables, one for “Danger” and another for “Opportunity”)

Therefore, a BIG theme today is how to create, let alone embed, sustainable innovative capability into organisations (the so-called, ambidextrous model). Cool(E)motion is a unique opportunity to get a glimpse of another reality, to operate in a surrounding that can’t be easily created by yourself, an opportunity to become networked in a way it can’t otherwise.
